Learning Goes Vertical in Ms. Goldstein’s and Ms. Klepacki’s classroom!
Today’s lesson brought math to life as students worked vertically around the room, sharing ideas and building understanding together. In small groups, they analyzed distance graphs to interpret motion, identify key features such as slope and intercepts, and connect those features to meaning in context. Students used function notation to clearly describe relationships between variables, explaining how changes in the input affected the output. As they debated strategies, asked clarifying questions, and revised their work in real time, students demonstrated perseverance, collaboration, and strong mathematical reasoning. This vertical work structure encouraged accountability, rich discussion, and multiple solution paths, helping every student actively engage in making sense of functions.

During our Monday club sessions over the past three weeks, we've been crafting Greek mythology-themed bead bracelets. Each bead color represents a different god or goddess, allowing us to wear symbols of the ancient pantheon. For example, like gold beads for Zeus, sea blue for Poseidon, silver for Artemis, etc.

Happy and Healthy New Year from the Science Team at HSFI!

Our Green Team delivered apple and orange donations put together by our cafeteria staff to The Bowery Mission, where they help serve over 1,000 hot meals daily to families in need. Small acts of kindness can make a big difference—Thank you to Ms. Joanne and the cafeteria personnel for putting together the donation boxes. @bowerymission @nycschoolsustainability

Creativity is everywhere at HSFI, and these lockers are proof! Decorated by 10th grader Fatou Mbaye, they add color, personality, and joy to our hallways. Fatou has designed and wrapped multiple lockers at the request of her friends, and her artwork helps our building shine a little brighter every single day!

“Team work makes the dream work”! Fashion with A Purpose learn the importance of team building as they prepare to mentor and teach a group of Middle School students from the South Bronx. A special shout out and thank you to Ms. Moreira our admissions representative for the upcoming collaboration. -Mermaid Parade Club

Cracking under pressure? Not these physicists! 🥚🚀
Today in Physics, our students at HSFI channeled their inner engineers for the Holiday Egg Drop Challenge! 🎄🕎✨ Students didn’t just decorate their eggs with festive holiday themes—they used serious science to keep them from becoming "scrambled."
Armed with the principles of Impulse and Momentum, they designed containers to maximize air resistance and manage gravitational potential energy from a 2.5m drop! 📏💥
The results? Most didn't make it to the "Nice List," but we had 2 groups survive the plunge! 🏆 The best part? Tomorrow we dive into the Success Skill: Constructive Problem Solving. Students will evaluate what worked, analyze the "cracks" in their designs, and revise for the future. 🛠️🧠
Science isn't just about getting it right the first time—it’s about learning from the impact!
Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Happy Kwanzaa from HSFI Physics! ❄️✨

Ocean Acidification Lab
Featuring the Marine Science class. In this investigation, students explored how increased carbon dioxide changes ocean chemistry. They compare three cups: neutral water, water with CO₂ gently blown in, and vinegar as a model of a highly acidic ocean. By observing pH differences and the effects on materials like shells, students see how rising CO₂ levels can lower ocean pH and impact marine life.

Keeping it rational… one fraction at a time!
Students in Ms. Granstrand and Ms. Garcia’s Algebra 2 class know it’s important to stand up for math! In class, they used vertical whiteboards to solve rational equations.

Senior Photo majors had a busy week– they were photographing headshots for a magazine, learning to digitize film photography, and photographing school sports teams for the 2026 yearbook!
