Software Development majors in Susan Ettenheim's 10th grade class kicked off the school year with a "meet and greet", sharing why and how they became software majors, and stories about the people who have inspired them, who they admire in their lives and most importantly, finding commonality with shared favorite colors, favorite foods and favorite activities outside the classroom.

ALL THE WORLD COLLECTIVE hosts HSFI's theater club. In the fall students learn about what goes on backstage as well as the basics of scene production, and in the spring it will culminate in a student written, student centered play or musical or play.
HUDSON GUILD is offering a podcasting and music production club.

LADY FALCONS BOWLING TEAM NOW 2-0!
THIS WAS A TOUGH MATCH AGAINST CHELSEA CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION that was decided in the C game of the match.
The A game was lost by 20 pins, although Teixeira McIntosh threw her first double in competition, making it a close game.
The match was carried by the B team made up of rookies and returning second year players. Alannah Louis and Saphira (Maddy) Torres tossed their personal best, making their first strikes in competition and defeating the other team by over 50 pins.
The C match was led by Gabby Colon who had a clean first five frames to help put the pressure on. Jessica Elie-Pierre had a match high of 144 forcing the opponents to try and keep up but they couldn't.
The highlight of the match was Madison Tyson coming in as a second half substitute and closing out the game with a spare - strike in the ninth and tenth frames, sealing a 23 pin victory.
Lady Falcons' next match is Tuesday, September 22nd against Beacon High School --- a battle of two 2-0 teams.

AGREE, DISAGREE OR NEUTRAL?
STEPHEN RAU'S 12TH GRADE GOVERNMENT CLASS had their debating skills put to the test as they challenged each other's thinking and practiced how to defend a position.
Convening on HSFI's fifth floor veranda, fast-paced lively discussions were prompted with politically timely, socially sensitive and highly controversial statements that students made one at a time. Each took a turn to stand on a concrete bench that served as both a podium and launching pad sparking all kinds of reactions.
Students were not required to agree with their own statement, but rather be cognizant of a question's value as a hot topic for argument and capable of igniting strong views on all sides.
Once hearing the statement, students reacted by moving left, right, or center, representing locations groups that agree, disagree or are neutral.
CELL PHONES ARE ADDICTING was the first statement opening up the forum by Mr. Rau.
TECHNOLOGY MAKES SOCIETY MORE SOCIAL. As positions were hesitantly formed, Mr. Rau challenged his students with, "What's the definition of social? When four people sitting in a restaurant all together are independently on their phones, is that social?"
The statement that generated the strongest position responses on all sides was:
TRANS MEN SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO PLAY IN WOMEN'S SPORTS
DISAGREE: "Men play most of the sports. They have more popularity. And men are stronger than women. Women don't have enough recognition."
Rather than NEUTRAL, there was a CONDITIONAL response. "It depends. Not everyone agrees on the gender role, but it's sports, and and everyone should be allowed to play a sport. It depends on what sport and what part of their bodies have been altered, and if there's physical contact." Distinctions were made, citing men should not be allowed in women's wrestling, for example, but should be allowed in women's golf.
AGREE: "In today's sports standards, they should be allowed. There's a lot of thought put into this. There are so many regulations already. When those regulations are met, at what point are you allowed to play? I think if you meet the requirements, you should be able to play, no matter what you were born as."
Mr. Rau was pleased that this particular statement was raised, and connected it back to his Government class. "This was an important topic, as it was an election topic. This came up in the election. People were deciding on that."

GETTING DOWN TO BUSINESS: VIRTUAL ENTERPRISE 1
MIRNA DAMIAN ISAZA's 12th grade Virtual Enterprise 1 class is picking up right where they left off at the end of 11th grade. In this entrepreneurial venture, student groups are revisiting their work from last year, in which they've launched a business from scratch, named REVE & CO -- an event planning company.
"We're doing business development work, building upon the concepts from last year," Ms. Damian Isaza explained.
Working in groups, they've set off to conduct an extensive analysis, making determinations and decisions as to how they want to move forward with marketing the existing brand.
Students engaged in brainstorming sessions, honing in on the idea of, "Did that business model work?"
Megan Diaz (left) offered some specifics on what her group was currently assessing. "Right now we're trying to decide whether we want to keep the business idea. If we do, we want to make it more known, make the website better and tweak it so it's more engaging to our target audience."
Students are also being given the option to start a new business from scratch.
What's most important to Ms. Damian Isaza is empowering her students to be independent thought leaders. "I'm giving them ownership."

He's HSFI's Assistant Principal of Safety and Security for the past 22 years.
Under Mr. Raschilla's leadership, over 1500 students and 200 faculty members are kept safe. He's a veteran of developing his own signature policies and procedures in conjunction with being on top of the ever evolving rules and regulations of New York State Law, the DOE and NYC policy. The NYPD Safety Agents are also part of his team.
"We are prepared for anything. We are prepared for any type of situation in this building, and that's something I'm very proud of," Raschilla explained."We have a plan for everything. And it's in writing. Nothing is more important than safety, and it's a collective responsibility. The biggest accomplishment in implementing and executing these plans is communication." The role has evolved over the years, including numerous new safety protocols, such as a Mental Heath Safety plan.
It's a serious job, but Mr. Raschilla keeps things light on the surface, always at the ready with a smile or healthy dose of New York wit.
"It's important to be approachable," Raschilla said. "That in itself creates a sense of safety."

CONNECTING GEOMETRY TO THE HSFI MINDSET:
"I understand that some of you are artists," was an opening statement made by Misha Kulshresta, on the first day of Geometry class for HSFI 10th graders, along with a group of advanced placement 9th graders.
The beauty and the simplicity of making a perfect circle with a compass and making a perfectly straight line with a straight edge were opening lessons explored by first experimenting with freehand pencil work and then contrasted by using these tools. Students were further engaged by Mr. Kulshresta and his co-teacher, Ms. Bayer, by going around the room having students read each drawing prompt out loud.
New vocabulary terms, and gaining an understanding of language such as "congruent" and "incongruent" shapes -- and being able to identify and articulate concepts such as, "a regular hexagon is one that has congruent sides" were part of the lesson.
Mr. Kulshresta is a new teacher recently hired by HSFI through the NYC Teaching Fellows. He comes from the Northwest, having earned his Bachelors from UC Santa Barbara and his Masters in Statistics from the University of Washington.
HSFI is excited to have Mr. Kulshresta as a great new addition to our Math department and our school.

On this 25th Anniversary of 9/11, Social Studies teachers Jacob Trimpe and Emily Lake engaged their 11th grade students in discussion by first asking them to write a response on a post it note to three different prompts:
1 - What do you know about it?
2 - Do you have a personal story about it?
3 - Ask a question.

"Although the students were not yet born, as New Yorkers, 9/11 touched the lives of their families. We wanted to open a forum for discussion by asking what they know through the context of what their parents and loved ones remembered and have shared with them. While many of the stories were quite different, there was one common question that was asked. "Why?"

How many NYC High School principals do you know who stand outside the building every single morning and greet each student?
Principal Daryl Blank is one of them, and he's been doing this for the past 16 years.
Here he is at 7:30 am welcoming our new HSFI 9th graders and their families on the first day of school.
Give him a couple of weeks. He'll be greeting the students by name, too.
This seemingly subtle approach has an important strategy behind it. "We want to bring our students to the greatest heights we can bring them, and that begins by making them feel welcome," Blank said. "Belongingness, Literacy, and a focus on HSFI's signature Success Skills are the core of our mission here."
