In Ms. Goldstein’s and Ms. Klepacki’s Algebra 1 classes at HSFI, students stepped into the role of math doctors. Each randomly assigned group was given a different visual representation of a sequence posted vertically around the room as a “patient” in need of diagnosis.

Students analyzed each pattern to determine whether it was arithmetic with a constant difference or geometric with a constant ratio. After identifying the type of sequence, they wrote the explicit formula and used it to calculate the 5th and 20th terms. This required students to move beyond simple pattern recognition and translate visual growth into precise algebraic language.

The vertical learning structure promoted collaboration, accountability, and academic discourse. Students stood together at the board, debated their reasoning, justified whether the pattern showed repeated addition or multiplication, and checked one another’s work before finalizing their diagnosis.

By connecting visual models to explicit formulas and long term predictions, students strengthened the exact skills needed for success on the Algebra Regents. This Regents ready activity built conceptual understanding while reinforcing procedural fluency and confidence.

In Ms. Goldstein’s and Ms. Klepacki’s Algebra 1 classes, students worked in randomly assigned groups to analyze visual “sequence patients,” diagnose them as arithmetic or geometric, write explicit formulas, and determine the 5th and 20th terms, all through a Regents-ready vertical learning activity.

Mrs. Damian’s senior Virtual Enterprise class, RÊVE & Co., participated in the National Business Plan Competition hosted at St. Francis College. The team presented their business concept while competing against other student-run companies from across the country. The experience allowed students to apply their entrepreneurial skills in a high level competitive setting.

Sophomore VP Isseu made a representation of HSFI for our classroom winter door contest (which we won!) We got rid of the “snow” and brought it into spring. In this window we see animals “lifting up” the building. This is a metaphor of how diversity lifts us up- and we are “growing” together. There are little details created by Stephen Torres such has a fruita stand, a helado cart, and a melting bag of ice next to a garbage can, representing NO ICE! The text of the window reads, “Central Needle Trades High School was founded in 1926 by immigrant communities who helped build New York City’s garment industry. In 1956, it became the High School for Fashion Industries (HSFI), expanding its curriculum to include design, merchandising, and the creative arts. For nearly a century, the school has welcomed generations of immigrant and diverse students, cultivating an inclusive community where creativity, skills, and opportunity not only empower individuals but also enrich the life of the city itself. Here’s to 100 years and counting.”

Desi Dance joined the Black History Month celebration @ HSFI. They danced to the tune of "Run It Up" by Hanumankind that highlight themes of perseverance, ambition, and rising above obstacles—ideas that resonate strongly with the spirit of Black History Month. The song’s focus on success despite adversity reflects the historical journey of Black communities who have continually pushed forward in the face of systemic barriers.
