Students from the High School of Fashion Industries’ (HSFI) Hoops and Beyond mentorship program took an exciting step into the community recently, embarking on an immersive field trip to The Door’s youth facility on Broome Street. The trip offered the young men a firsthand look at a vital community hub while strengthening their bonds as a brotherhood.

Upon arriving at the vibrant downtown facility, the Hoops and Beyond cohort was treated to a comprehensive, top-to-bottom tour of the entire building. Guided by Lidge, community staff, the students reviewed the extensive web of resources The Door offers NYC youth, ranging from academic support and career counseling to creative arts, legal services, health care, and of course Sports! For a group built around opening doors to future success, seeing a space completely dedicated to youth empowerment left a powerful impression.

After taking in the impressive facility, the group sat down together to enjoy a great lunch, recharging and chatting about the highlights of the tour.

The young men quickly gravitated toward the center's lounge area, where they bonded over high-energy video game sessions. Laughter and friendly trash-talk filled the room as the boys competed side-by-side, cementing the peer relationships at the heart of the program. In another corner of the room, the spirit of friendly competition continued as one of the Hoops and Beyond students challenged a youth leader to a fast-paced game of table tennis.

"Trips like this show our young men that their community is full of people and places eager to support them," said one of the program coordinators. "Whether we are on the basketball court, reviewing community resources, or just playing video games together, the goal remains the same: building confidence, resilience, and a true sense of belonging."

By connecting the students to enriching environments like The Door, Hoops and Beyond continues to prove that its impact reaches far beyond the gym floor equipping these young men with the networks and life skills they need to navigate their futures with confidence.
