At the start of every new semester, the science labs are buzzing with activity—but before students can pick up a beaker or strike a match, they must master the most important rule of all: Safety First.

This week, all HSFI Regents Science and Lab based science classes participated in our mandatory semi-annual Lab Safety Tutorial. This ensures that every student is fully prepared to navigate a laboratory environment responsibly.

Shared Precautions: The Basics

Regardless of the subject, certain safety non-negotiables apply to all students entering a laboratory space:

  • Proper Attire: Closed-toed shoes must be worn at all times to protect against spills or dropped objects.

  • Hair & Loose Items: Long hair must be tied back, and dangling jewelry or loose clothing must be secured before beginning work.

  • Eye Protection: Safety goggles are required whenever heat, glassware, or chemicals are in use.

  • Chemical & Equipment handling: Using devices properly, reading instructions and precautions in pre-lab.

Once students pass the safety quiz, they are now cleared to begin their hands-on explorations. This semester’s curriculum promises exciting experiments, ranging from studying spring constants in physics to complex chemical titrations.

The science department reminds all students to stay vigilant, respect the equipment, and always "think safety" before beginning any investigation. We look forward to a semester of safe, successful, and groundbreaking discoveries!
