This week in the physical education classes the students voted on their annual Participatory Budget Project, The school receives 2,500 dollars in funding for students to identify and find a school need determined by the students. Mr. Blank, HSFI's Principal, matches the funds for a total of 5,000 dollars.
The students in the senior government classes take part in the Participatory Budget project, which earns them Seal of Civic Readiness points. These students create a steering committee which has one representative per class and begin the process by surveying the school community as to identifying a need. From there the return to the classes with the survey data and begin to pare down the responses into six topics. They create a presentation, budget and poster supporting their choice. The class uses rank choice voting to determine which project idea will represent their class to the steering committee. The steering committee organizes the choice from each class, will ask similar topics to combine for create a final ballot for the school wide election. This year the final ballot choices were: Hygiene Supplies, Microwaves for cafe, CTE supplies, Library Upgrades and Backstage renovations. The students voted using rank choice voting and the results will be shared in the FAB news Friday January 16.
