On Wednesday, our SGO student leaders transformed the Student Lounge into an immersive Native American Heritage Showcase—an interactive experience honoring the sounds, symbols, and natural elements that have shaped Indigenous cultures for generations. Designed, organized, and hosted by students, the showcase invited classes from Physical Education and SEL to explore culture through touch, sound, storytelling, and reflection.
The event centered on learning that was tactile, thoughtful, and rooted in deep respect. Rather than simply observing, students moved through a series of hands-on stations that highlighted the creativity, traditions, and relationships with nature that exist across Indigenous communities.
✨ Key Stations & Experiences Included:
🪶 Clay Bead–Making Station
Students shaped and decorated their own clay beads, learning how handcrafted adornments have long served as storytelling tools, representations of family, and markers of personal identity in many Native cultures.
🧵 Weaving Banner Station
A collective weaving banner invited students to choose thread colors that represented their personal pledge—such as kindness, protection, growth, or peace—and weave them into a larger community piece symbolizing unity and connection.
🌿 Herb & Essential Oil Station
Students explored natural scents and herbs traditionally used for healing, grounding, and ceremony. They learned about the role of plants such as sage, lavender, and cedar, and how nature has been central to wellness practices in Indigenous communities.
🌱 Planting Station
Participants planted seeds while reflecting on growth, stewardship of the earth, and the responsibility we carry to nurture both the land and each other—echoing Indigenous teachings around sustainability and care.
🌲 Forest Tunnel Experience
One of the most memorable installations was the forest tunnel, designed to simulate walking through a natural pathway. As students moved through it, they were encouraged to whisper or write a positive nature-based wish—an intention carried through the “forest” as part of a symbolic cleansing and grounding ritual.
🥁 Drum & Music Circle
Students engaged with rhythms inspired by traditional drumming patterns, experiencing how drumbeats connect communities, ceremonies, and storytelling. This space emphasized the importance of sound in Indigenous expression and collective gathering.
📽️ Native American Film & History Stream
A curated film loop highlighted stories, symbols, artists, and historical perspectives, giving students a deeper understanding of Native experiences, resilience, and contributions across time.
This showcase was more than an event, it was a celebration of culture, learning, and student leadership. Our SGO members demonstrated remarkable creativity, compassion, and purpose in ensuring the experience honored Indigenous traditions while engaging their peers in meaningful, hands-on exploration.
By the end of the day, students walked away not just with the items they created, but with a deeper appreciation for Native American heritage and the importance of cultural respect.
We are proud of our student leaders for crafting an experience that was immersive, educational, and truly heartfelt.
