Our English Language Arts department is buzzing with energy this year as students take the lead in classroom discussions! Teachers are using the Three Reads Protocol from New Visions for Public Schools to help students dive deeper into what they read and prepare for the kind of academic conversations they’ll have in college.
Through three purposeful readings — first to understand the text, then to analyze its meaning, and finally to connect it to larger ideas — students are learning to think critically and express their ideas with confidence. Instead of just answering questions, they’re engaging in thoughtful dialogue, challenging one another’s interpretations, and using evidence to support their thinking.
This focus on student voice is transforming classrooms into lively spaces where curiosity and collaboration thrive. By practicing active discussion, students are not only building stronger reading and writing skills but also developing essential life skills — communication, confidence, and problem-solving — that will serve them well in any future path they choose.
