This past Sunday, members of Iconoclan, our school’s hip-hop and reggae dance team, had the opportunity to experience one of the world’s most well-known modern dance groups — the Paul Taylor Dance Company — perform live at Lincoln Center in New York City.

Thanks to the Company’s partnership with local high schools, our dancers were able to attend the show and witness modern dance at an incredible level. The performance included a couple of the Company’s classic pieces, one of which even earned an Emmy Award decades ago — a great example of how lasting Paul Taylor’s influence has been.

After the performance, our students took part in a Q&A with two of the dancers, who talked about their creative process, how they prepare for shows, and what it’s like to continue the work of such a legendary choreographer. Many of our dancers said they were inspired by the emotion and storytelling in the movement — even though it came from a different dance style than their own.

The visit to Lincoln Center was not only a fun cultural outing but also a reminder of how dance can connect people across styles, backgrounds, and communities.

Iconoclan keeps growing as a team that values creativity, teamwork, and appreciation for all forms of dance. Experiences like this motivate our dancers to keep pushing themselves, trying new things, and exploring the art form in new ways.
