BBBS Verizon Cohort

Excitement filled the air as the Big Brothers Big Sisters Verizon Cohort officially launched its new school year, bringing together a motivated group of 11th-grade students eager to set goals, build meaningful connections, and take the next steps in their journey toward college and career readiness.

The first meeting marked the beginning of an enriching experience that combines mentorship, professional development, and personal growth. Students gathered to meet their mentors, learn about the year’s objectives, and begin setting SMART goals designed to guide them through a productive and purposeful school year.

“This program gives our students the tools and confidence they need to plan for their futures,” said Ms. Padron, 11th Grade Guidance Counselor, who helps facilitate the cohort. “We’re not just talking about college and careers — we’re building the skills and mindset needed for lifelong success.”

Throughout the school year, participants in the Verizon Cohort will dive into a series of engaging workshops and hands-on learning experiences covering a wide range of topics, including:

  • SMART Goal Setting – Learning how to create specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound goals.

  • Resume Writing & Cover Letter Preparation – Crafting professional documents that showcase individual strengths and achievements.

  • LinkedIn & Interview Skills – Developing a professional online presence and practicing essential communication strategies.

  • Career Exploration & Special Event Day – Connecting with professionals and exploring various career pathways.

  • Life After High School: How to Afford It – Understanding budgeting, financial aid, and the realities of post-secondary life.

  • Post-Secondary Options & The Application Process – Navigating college, trade school, or workforce applications with confidence.

  • End-of-Year Project: Future Me – Reflecting on personal growth and envisioning future goals through a culminating project.

The partnership between Big Brothers Big Sisters and Verizon continues to provide students with invaluable mentorship opportunities, access to professional networks, and real-world experiences that bridge the gap between classroom learning and future success.

“I’m really excited to learn how to prepare for college and my future career,” said an 11th-grade participant. “It feels great to be part of something that helps us think about what’s next.”

As the program unfolds, students will engage in both group sessions and one-on-one mentoring, gaining guidance not only on professional skills but also on personal development, leadership, and resilience. The goal: to empower each student to graduate high school with a clear plan — and the confidence to achieve it.

With the support of Verizon and the mentorship of Big Brothers Big Sisters, this year’s cohort is poised to make the most of every opportunity ahead.

Here’s to an inspiring and transformative year for our 11th-grade students — as they grow, reflect, and prepare for the bright futures ahead!
