AUDITION COMPONENTS 

All students applying to the High School of Fashion Industries must take the entrance examination and prepare a portfolio and video to be presented during the admissions exam.

ONLINE AUDITIONS EXAM - 20 points

 

ALL prospective students are required to fill out the online exam that consists of 13 parts.

You will need to fill out 11 of the 13 parts if you are auditioning for ONE major

OR

12 of the 13 parts if you are auditioning for TWO majors

OR

13 of the 13 parts if you are auditioning for ALL three majors.

ALL applicants are required to attach the video and portfolio pieces to this exam:

Section 2 - General Student Info

Section 3 - Guardian General Info

Section 4 - 2nd Guardian General Info

Section 5 - Current School Info

Section 6 - Major Choice and Questionnaire

Section 7 - Essay submission (ALL students must fill out this essay portion regardless of major choice) (1 FILE - MAX 1 MB)

Section 8 - Foreign Language Placement Test (to place you in the correct Spanish class)

Section 9 - ART Portfolio submission - 3 to 6 Pieces (MAX 1 GB EACH) + Student Intro (VIDEO MAX 10 GB OR WRITTEN  MAX 10 MB) ) + Virtual Performance task (MAX 5 FILES - MAX 10 MB TOTAL)

Section 10 - FASHION Portfolio submission - 5 Pieces (MAX 10 MB EACH) + Virtual Performance task (MAX 5 FILES - MAX 10 MB TOTAL)

Section 11 - BUSINESS Portfolio submission - Visual Piece (MAX 5 FILES - MAX 100 MB TOTAL) + related Essay (1 FILE - MAX 10 MB)

Section 12 - Video submission (prompt: see below) - Upload your MAX. 2 minute video here (1 FILE - MAX 10 GB)

Section 13 - Waiver  

VIDEO REQUIREMENTS - 30 points 

All prospective students will create a 2 minute video answering following questions: Tell me about yourself?  What are your strengths and weaknesses? Why do you want to go to the high school of fashion industries? Why should we pick you? 

PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS - 50 points

Complete an Art, Business Marketing and Visual Merchandising or Fashion Design portfolio depending on which program you would like to major in at the High School of Fashion Industries. You may create more than one portfolio.

  1. All work should be neat, clean and unwrinkled.

  2. Drawings should be done on unlined paper and mounted on construction paper (preferably black so your illustrations stand out).

  3. Upload and store all work into a digital folder ready to attach to online audition.

  4. Put forth your best effort. Remember that a neat, well-organized and complete portfolio will without a doubt be recognized

These are GENERAL requirements - we do not offer SPECIFICS because we want to see the RANGE of CREATIVITY of the applicant. All WORK submitted must be ORIGINAL and submitted online ATTACHED to their online audition.

 

I. Portfolio Upload - Submit 5 ORIGINAL fashion illustrations/designs

 

II. Virtual Performance Task: Figure Drawing 

In addition to your portfolio works, please submit photographs of one figure drawing with in-progress photos.

Using pencil and paper, draw the human figure. Make sure you draw the entire figure and fit it on the page – do not cut off parts of the head or feet.

Draw your figure with realistic proportions. Try to use value or lines to draw the folds on the clothes. Include any observed details & draw the facial features. Include background elements to place the figure in a space to prevent them from floating in the air. You may choose to pose a friend or family member. 

The drawing should be completed within 30-45 minutes. We are looking to see how you develop your drawing. Please take photographs of your work throughout your drawing and submit 4 photographs for the drawing at the follow times: 

  1. A photograph at 5 minutes. 

  2. A photograph at 10 minutes. 

  3. A photograph at 20 minutes. 

  4. A photograph of the completed drawing at 30-45 minutes. 

VISUAL ARTS, DIGITAL ARTS & GRAPHIC Design, PhotograpHY

Please note students applying specifically for Visual Arts will submit all their audition pieces on the

All WORK submitted must be ORIGINAL and submitted online ATTACHED to online exam.

 

I. Portfolio Upload - Submit photographs of 3 to 6 pieces of original artwork that includes the following: 

  1. A self-portrait, done from observation (from observation means you draw yourself by looking in a mirror).  

  2. A still life, done from observation (from observation means you draw objects placed before you on a table).  

  3. You may choose the remaining 1 to 4 pieces you wish to include. Pieces can be created using any material in any form, and may be two-dimensional or three-dimensional.   

 

II. Student Introduction 

Upload a short video OR written explanation about the uploaded pieces of original artwork.

Discuss choice of subject & materials, motivation, & influences. Your video should be no longer than 2 minutes. Written explanations should be no more than 500 words.

Portfolio Upload - Submit a 200-word essay describing a student’s favorite store to shop AND a visual advertisement for this store - FAILURE TO SUBMIT BOTH WILL BE SCORED AS INCOMPLETE

  1. Use different medium such as colored pencils, watercolor or tempera paints, charcoal and oil pastels.

  2. VARIETY is an important characteristic of a well developed portfolio.

  3. RESEARCH different famous artists and their works to gather ideas to create your own original pieces. The NYC public library has a vast collection of art history.
